Breast Cancer Network Australia Welcomes Government Announcement Australian women to receive funded access to Tykerb as of May 1 2008 Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) is delighted with Federal Health Minister Nicola Roxon’s announcement today that Tykerb will be listed on the Pharmaceutical Benefit Scheme (PBS) from May 1 2008. Tykerb is a treatment option for women living with a particular type of secondary breast cancer, (also known as advanced or metastatic breast cancer). Lyn Swinburne, breast cancer survivor and BCNA’s CEO, commented that this announcement is a wonderful outcome for many women who have been waiting a long time for this process to be finalised. “The government’s decision to list Tykerb on the PBS removes the worry of a significant financial strain for women who are eligible for this treatment option,” Mrs Swinburne said. With a membership base of over 27,000 – over 90% breast cancer survivors, BCNA has been advocating for Tykerb to be listed on the PBS so that women who are eligible, can afford this treatment option. “As Tykerb is administered in a tablet form, it is also a convenient option for eligible women living in rural and remote areas, as they don’t have to travel long distances for this treatment,” Mrs Swinburne added. Note: Tykerb is now registered and approved for use in New Zealand but is not funded by PHARMAC. Costs can range from $40,000 - $50,000 for a 12 month treatment regime with an approximate cost of $2300 every two weeks.
