Welcome to the Amazon Club by Jane Bissell
(Longacre Press 2004)Welcome to the Amazon Club
Welcome to the Amazon Club describes Jane’s first year following her breast cancer diagnosis. The book is endorsed by Mrs Belinda Scott (Breast Surgeon and Medical Chairperson of The New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation).
Jane’s sense of humour parallels the seriousness of her experience and a reader may find themselves laughing and crying at the same time as they share the rollercoaster ride of thoughts and feelings. The book offers support, reassurance and practical advice for women experiencing breast cancer and for those who care for them.

What the reviewers say about ‘Welcome to the Amazon Club’
‘As a member of The Amazon Club myself, I could relate readily to this account and can assure readers – especially new members of the Club, their supporters and health professionals – that it could well help them cope with this all too common condition.’ Nelson Mail

‘I recommend this book for anyone who is going through a traumatic experience. Bissell’s account of her experience is inspirational …’ Wairarapa News

‘The Amazon Club has a heart-breaking initiation, but membership does have some life-changing rewards  ...’ The Dominion Post

‘It’s a wonderful book, allowing the reader an insight in to the feelings a person has as she goes through what must be one of the worst experiences possible. Highly recommended.’
The Marlborough Express.

Black Pearls 2007 Calendar The Black Pearls Calendar, a project initiated by Raewyn Calvert and The Reconstructables in June 2006, has attracted national media attention since it was distributed to MPs and other government officials in November. Copies of this keepsake calendar are now available through BCAC.

Ms Calvert was incensed by a Ministry of Health directive in June that required District Health Boards to cull surgical waiting lists. Many women expecting breast reconstruction were dropped from lists and sent back to their GPs. Some had been waiting for over two years.

‘The goal of The Reconstructables,’ said Ms Calvert,’ is to ensure that every New Zealand woman who chooses to have a breast reconstruction following breast cancer surgery is guaranteed that option. The women who posed for this calendar have done so from the heart and with the support of their loved ones. It has taken immense courage and has not been done for the good of the individuals, but for the well being of all New Zealand women.’

Copies of this beautiful Calendar are still available through BCAC - please to order yours or buy now online. A $25 minimum donation is requested and all funds raised go towards BCAC. Read more about the Black Pearls Calendar here.
