BCAC is calling for breast cancer survivors to put themselves forward as candidates for membership of the Health Quality & Safety Commission’s Consumer Network to help improve health and disability care in New Zealand.

The Commission is the government agency charged with ensuring that all New Zealanders receive the best health and disability care within available resources.

It has a dedicated Consumer Network as part of its commitment to consumers being actively involved in decision-making about health and disability services, including governance, planning and policy development.

BCAC chair, Libby Burgess, says consumers have a valuable contribution to make to any efforts to improve the health system.

“When you’ve been through the health system first-hand as a patient who has experienced a significant disease such as breast cancer, or as someone who has supported a family member through such an experience, you do become aware of areas that could be improved to ensure that patients get the best possible treatment and care.

“Too often the consumer perspective has been ignored, so it’s great to see the Health Quality & Safety Commission including consumer views and input.  I’d encourage those who’ve had breast cancer who feel they may have a contribution to make to consider applying.”

The Commission’s consumer network group comprises  up to eight members and is currently seeking three new members.

The Commission is particularly interested in applicants who identify with one or more of the following groups:

  • Māori
  • having a disability
  • family/whānau/carer.

Applicants do not have to represent specific groups or organisations, but should have strong networks across consumer communities.

The role involves three to four meetings a year and successful applicants will be reimbursed for their time and expenses.
