BCAC welcomes Te Puna, BreastScreen Aotearoa’s new online breast screening system, which is now live right across Aotearoa New Zealand.
Te Puna replaces an old platform and moves Breastscreen Aotearoa from paper-based to digital assessments. This means improved reliability, functionality and usability. It also means much better tracking of participants, improved data and reporting.
This is a significant milestone for BreastScreen Aotearoa. There are around 135,000 women across New Zealand who are currently eligible and not participating in breast screening. Te Puna will help more women to access breast screening, by automatically identifying eligible women to send an invitation to enrol and book, shifting from an opt in to an opt out enrolment approach. Reaching more women will significantly increase screening coverage and the detection of breast cancer earlier.
Te Puna now enables women to enrol, book, or change a breast screen appointment online at their convenience. Women will be sent a secure personalised link or QR code via email, text or letter when they become eligible or are due for a screen. This will significantly improve access to breast screening services – particularly for wāhine Māori, Pacific women, and women that are under-screened or unscreened.
Feedback to date has been positive, with both breast screening providers and women, commenting how simple and intuitive the booking system and new workflows are to navigate.
