Event Date

Join us for this online Q&A event to hear about breast cancer in young women. Moderated by Australian TV presenter and author Annabel Crabb, the panel of leading breast cancer experts will discuss the latest breast cancer clinical trials research, as well as the unique challenges faced by young women diagnosed with breast cancer including implications for fertility, psychological impacts and the support services available.

All women are at risk of developing breast cancer and the risk greatly increases with age with most cases of breast cancer occurring in women over the age of 50. However, young women diagnosed with breast cancer often face unique challenges and are more likely to be diagnosed with a more aggressive type of cancer. Women who are pre-menopausal, or who are 40 years or younger are defined as ‘young women’ in the breast cancer sense, and account for approximately 6% of breast cancers diagnosed in NZ each year.

Some of the challenges facing young women diagnosed with breast cancer may include premature menopause, fertility and sexuality issues, and the impacts of breast cancer on caring for young children, education and career. As a result, young women may experience higher levels of medical and psychological distress following a diagnosis.

This event will be broadcast live from Federation Square in Melbourne and is part of the Breast Cancer Trials Annual Scientific Meeting.
