Lobular breast cancer - free webinar presented by BCFNZ

Learn more about lobular breast cancer by registering for this free webinar.

Invasive lobular carcinoma is a cancer that has spread from the breast lobules into surrounding tissue. It is the second most common type of breast cancer, occurring in 10-15% of all cases. It may be multifocal (found in more than one place in the breast) and is sometimes found in both breasts.

Lobular breast cancer can sometimes be difficult to detect by physical examination or mammography as the cells form in single file strands which don’t cause as much distortion of the breast tissue. It may show up as a thickening of the breast tissue rather than a hard mass.

Dr Sheridan Wilson and Anna Stove will share their experiences with lobular breast cancer; from a patient and clinical perspective. There will also be a Q and A session.

Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge 2024

Calling all keen cyclists and their friends – the Breast Cancer Aotearoa Coalition has been added to the Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge 2024! On 30 November 2024, there’ll be events to suit everyone from hard-core cyclists to family groups – on road bikes, mountain bikes and e-bikes. For added motivation, and to help kiwi women with breast cancer, anyone who enters can easily set up a fundraiser for BCAC, so that all their supporters and friends can sponsor them to ride. Click this link to find out how.

Every dollar raised will go towards getting a free Step by Step support pack out to everyone at the time of their diagnosis, and to support BCAC’s ongoing efforts to get essential breast cancer medicines to everyone who needs them. BCAC is 100% volunteer-run, so every dollar goes to helping kiwis with breast cancer. Click here to learn more about BCAC and what we do.

Breast Cancer and Fertility: Online Q and A event

Around 400 New Zealand women under the age of 45 are diagnosed with breast cancer each year. Having a family may be top of mind for many of these women. While others may not have thought about planning a family yet. But for those diagnosed with breast cancer during these childbearing years, decisions about treatment need to consider fertility. Australia-based research organisation Breast Cancer Trials is running an online Q and A session on Breast Cancer and Fertility on Tuesday 20 Feb 2024 at 7-8.30 pm NZT. You can register for this event here.

BCAC will also post a recording of this event on our website when it is released by the organisers at a later date.

IBSCG 24-02/BIG 2-02: SOFT Trial

The Suppression of Ovarian Function Trial (SOFT) randomly assigned premenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive breast cancer to 5 years of adjuvant tamoxifen, tamoxifen plus ovarian function suppression (OFS), or exemestane plus OFS. After 8 years, SOFT reported a significant reduction in recurrence and improved overall survival for those who had received tamoxifen plus OFS, compared with those who had received tamoxifen alone. After 12 years, disease-free survival remained significantly improved for those who had received tamoxifen plus OFS, compared with those receiving tamoxifen alone. A list of publications from this trial can be seen here.

An excellent overview, written in 2022, of the role of ovarian suppression in managing hormone-sensitive breast cancer in premenopausal women can be read here.

FINER Trial (recruitment completed, trial participants in follow-up)

The FINER clinical trial aims to find out if advanced ER-positive/HER2-negative breast cancer will remain under control for longer in patients who are given a new drug, ipatasertib, in addition to the standard treatment, fulvestrant. Ipatasertib works by blocking a cancer cell growth pathway (called PI3K-AKT-mTOR), which has been shown to be involved in some ER-positive breast cancers becoming resistant to treatment.

Who is the trial for? Those whose advanced ER-positive/HER2-negative breast cancer has progressed after ‘first line’ treatment with a CDK 4/6 inhibitor (such as palbociclib (Ibrance)) and an aromatase inhibitor (such as anastrozole, exemestane or letrozole).

Auckland City Hospital and Wellington Hospital are the New Zealand sites for this trial. Recruitment is now complete and the trial participants are in follow-up.

You can read more about this trial here and here.
